A Local Tradition

Ondrus Amusement Inc. has been a family-owned and operated coin amusement and vending business since the late 1930s. Started near the shores of Lake Michigan by Gus and Rose Ondrus in their small hometown of Union Pier, Michigan, the business has grown and changed with the changing times, but has remained true to its local family roots.

The Beginnings

Gus and Rose began by purchasing food and cigarette vending machines and placing them in local business establishments, bars and taverns. Among their early locations were the Welcome Inn in Stevensville, Michigan, the Royal Blue Grocery Store, Gillman's Grill and Louie's Tavern.

With their base of business operations conveniently situated on the border between Michigan and Indiana, Gus and Rose were able to serve stores, taverns and bars in both states. The vending machines held gumballs, candy and cigarettes. In the 1930s, gambling was still legal, so they also put nickel slot machines in the Royal Blue Grocery Store in Union Pier. There were no computerized electronic games, so early customers got their amusement from traditional juke boxes, pool tables and pinball machines.

Gus' son Arthur began working for the business in his teens, and took over the company in 1946 following his father's death. Following his marriage, he and his wife, Jessie, ran the business together. As new games and advanced computerized technologies became available, the inventory changed to include electronic dart boards and modern CD and downloadable jukeboxes. Later, sanctioned Dart Leagues and Pool Leagues were organized using the equipment supplied to local bars and taverns.

The Company Today

Today, Ondrus Amusement Inc. remains a family-owned and operated business that is proud of its long tradition of honesty and local service. Company President Jessie Ondrus, and her son, Vice President Art Ondrus, continue to operate the business from its Union Pier, Michigan headquarters. A trained staff provides administrative support, equipment installation and on-site maintenance and machine revenue tracking.

Vending machines have been phased out over the years, but a constantly-updated inventory of games offers the very latest in quality coin-operated electronic dart boards, pool tables, CD jukeboxes and a wide array of other amusement games to local businesses.
